The Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies and American Beethoven Society proudly present: The Takács Quartet performance with a lecture from Erica Buurman (Director, Beethoven Center)
The Grammy Award-winning Takács Quartet returns to ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø for a deep dive into one of Ludwig van Beethoven’s late masterpieces: the String Quartet in B-flat Major, op. 130. One of Beethoven’s most eclectic works, the Quartet op. 130 is by turns exuberant, introspective, intellectually rigorous, and folksy. In its original version it concluded with an immense fugue that early listeners famously considered incomprehensible (one critic called it “a confusion of Babelâ€). It is one of very few works that Beethoven revised substantially after the first performance—in this case by composing an entirely new finale.
This two-part event will begin with a lecture from the Beethoven Center’s Director,
Dr. Erica Buurman, unpacking the work’s history and its many allusions to the vibrant
and eclectic music world of Beethoven’s day. The Takács Quartet will then perform
the work (revised version) in its entirety.
*To make this event accessible to all, we are offering tickets for this event on a
pay-what-you-can model. All proceeds will help to support future Beethoven Center/American
Beethoven Society programs.
